It pains me that all these great shows are being chopped up into greatest hits albums. They weren't meant to be watched this way, but what can I do I supposed.

I buy it because at the time i was able to buy only DBD III & Punk the final chapter, so i miss the essential.
But i totally understand that the presentation of the summer is very basic and don't show how amazing it really was, better in my opinion that the summer 2011, In roh the angle had a begining, a great story and an end with the same quality.
The new ROH dvd also don't show the entrance due to the music right and they miss a BIG element of the CM Punk story, the music and entrance of CM Punk is totally a part of the angle and character.
But for a fan that never see Punk in ROH this is the best way to show them this period, but you NEVER see the best of CM Punk in ROH without the WrestleRave 2003 backstage promo with "This is Real, This is Straight Edge !".
Even if you are dissapointed Gabe you should be pride that you are one of the few booker who produce such an awesome moment that it can be a dvd on his one. You can't name a lot of wrestling Angle dvd, in a similar product i put the Raven-Dreamer complet DVD set.

I have the entire summer of punk story line on DVD as well as most of his feud with Raven.
I think its silly and sad that ROH keeps cashing in on the work of someone they exiled from their company with all these Best Of's.

Yea its silly if their so confident in their new product they wouldnt do that. The fact that they are will never get me back into what they do now if that is what their point is. I understand bringing back old fans with this but hell whats the point if they cant keep the old fans.

Yea its silly if their so confident in their new product they wouldnt do that. The fact that they are will never get me back into what they do now if that is what their point is. I understand bringing back old fans with this but hell whats the point if they cant keep the old fans. It's just that - cashing in. Sinclair's been doing a lot of that, really. I could get putting a collection out like this if they were going to have some sort of feature or documentary on the angle, recapping the story for newbs who, for the most part, will be getting this DVD having only ever heard the stories about Punk's ROH run, and can't otherwise get the full shows because they're out of print. You can't just assume people know the story going in, for one, and, for another, you can give fans a new perspective on it. Of course, I know why they don't do the feature - because maybe 3 guys that were even there at the time still work for the company now. But that's never stopped WWE from cobbling together a feature or documentary. It would also say that Sinclair put some actual WORK into the project, but I won't get into that. My point is, I'm not offended by the fact they do this. Of course they'll do this. Anyone with half a brain would realize that with the pre-existing audience, the huge back catalog, and the fact that this stuff has never been seen or possibly even heard of by the new audience coming in thanks to the TV, you can make a killing on compilation DVD sets. My problem is, if you're going to do it, put some work into it. Do some interviews, make a documentary of it, or, at the very least, have someone host the damn DVD so they can at least tell the newbie fans that don't know what's going on what's going on. You have to give fans perspective and context. Otherwise, all you're selling are stand-alone matches with no story or context whatsoever.

Stand-alone matches with no story or context whatsoever is how I got into ROH... and pretty much any other promotion too.

I think these releases are great. Not everyone has the money or the desire to buy dozens of DVDs. This is a great way for WWE Punk fans to check out his old stuff.

I'm empathetic with Gabe's viewpoint, as I very early on bought into his vision that ROH was like an ever-evolving (no pun) movie that simply happened to have chapter breaks. I have most every DVD from the company's inception to about mid-07. I loved most of 'em, was happy to buy 'em, but the truth is that I bought them when I was a lot younger and had no responsibilities in terms of where my money was going.
I love wrestling as much, if not more now than I ever have, but at this point in my life, if I got into a new promotion, or if I had only been a WWF/WWE fan my whole life and was just seeing something else for the first time, there's no way I'd ever go out and buy 40 DVDs, even over an extended period of time.
Time is limited for a lot of people, while entertainment options in that limited time are vast, and these are a great way to see a star you may be watching weekly if all you ever see is Raw/Smackdown. Maybe seeing the opponent of the guy you're familiar with makes you realize that they too have years of great matches to discover as time allows.
Think of all the CM Punk fans who see this DVD and it acts as a gateway to indy wrestling, changing their view of what wrestling is.

It's also not like ROH didn't release "best of" DVDs before too... I have 3 volumes of CM Punk on my shelf as we speak. Sometimes my friends ask me what ROH is all about and it's easier for me to hand them a DVD or two with a variety of matches with the same person so they are familiar with someone than to just throw a random show at them. Sometimes I myself just want to watch certain matches and it's easier to throw one disc in instead of watching one match, change discs, watch one match, change discs, etc. When it comes to wrestling DVDs I will buy the full show an the best ofs for those I really like.
