On July 22, Dragon Gate Pro Wrestling will have their biggest show of the year take place. Their equivalent to WrestleMania at Kobe World Hall in their homebase city of Kobe. Here is a rundown of the seven matches that will make up the card in the exact order they will be going.
1. Windows vs. Jimmyz: K-ness. (Windows), Keni'chiro Arai (Windows), Super Shisa (Windows), and Shisa BOY (Windows) vs. Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!! (Jimmyz), Ryo "Jimmy" Saito (Jimmyz), Jimmy Kanda (Jimmyz), and Naoki Tanizaki (Jimmyz)
Here we have two units named after phrases originally intended to be insults. To call someone a Jimmy in Japan is to call them boring and dull. To call an elder a window is to say that they are essentially wasting away their lives much like how an old office work spends the rest of his days working up to retirement with a window seat. Both teams have since looked to redefine their labels into success. While the Windows are on the path to doing this, the Jimmyz are experiencing a boom that has crossed outside of Dragon Gate and even Japan. This match will likely be a showcase for the teams to show that they're still high-level athletes. Another note for this match is that it will be the first match in six months for the true Naoki Tanizaki, who had been out with a bad shoulder injury.
2. Chihiro Tominaga (-akatsuki-) and Super Shenlong III (-akatsuki-) vs. Kotoka (Windows) and Rich Swann (WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL)
Whereas the first match is a showcase for the elder statesmen of Dragon Gate, this will be a showcase for the youngesters. More importantly, this is an opportunity for Chihiro Tominaga and Super Shenlong III to further elevate themselves in their rookie year, particularly Tominaga. The one time "Most Famous Trainee in Japan" will finally be competing in World and there is little doubt that he will be putting forth his best effort to date since challenging for Triangle Gate.
3. Evil Ways Calling!: Atsushi Onita and "Hollywood" Stalker Ichikawa (Team Veteran Returns) vs. Kzy (MAD BLANKEY) and Mondai Ryu (MAD BLANKEY)
Mondai Ryu has finally garnered some attention for himself. However, it's hardly the good kind. He has snapped to the point of being an awful wrestler on purpose, just to get underneath the skin of everyone else. And when they don't like it, he adds insult to injury by throwing salt at them. "Hollywood" Stalker Ichikawa, the original weakest wrestler in all of wrestling, has something against Ryu's attempts at being so evil while being so weak. In fact, he is of the opinion that his actions are hardly evil at all. To prove his point, he's bringing in Mr. Onita, the innovator of the deathmatch style of pro wrestling. Bad wrestling and salty destruction is sure to be in store.
4. Open The Brave Gate Championship: Dragon Kid (Team Veteran Returns) © vs. Ricochet (WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL)
The return match from the DEAD OR ALIVE pay-per-view back in May, where Dragon Kid shocked the world by pulling out the Dragonrana to defeat one of the crown jewels of Dragon Gate USA. Ricochet has spent most of the last two months back in the States, perhaps doing a little soul searching or looking for new ways to improve. Either way, he has returned to Japan to reclaim the biggest title of his career and he is plans to do so on the biggest stage in Dragon Gate. What's more, he's hoping history will repeat itself as it was last year when he and CIMA beat Dragon Kid and PAC for Twin Gate. But Dragon Kid has shown that he is not willing to go down without a fight. And he just might pull out his tried and true finisher once again to prove he's still got it.
5. Open The Twin Gate Championship: Jimmy Kagetora (Jimmyz) and Jimmy Susumu (Jimmyz) © vs. Shingo Takagi (-akatsuki-) and YAMATO (-akatsuki-)
The pioneers of the Jimmy boom have been tearing through the tag team ranks since teaming together late last year. To further illustrate just how strong they have gotten, they traveled outside of Dragon Gate and also claimed the ZERO-1 Junior Tag Team Championships. But they want to prove themselves that they truly are the top team, so they goaded one of the best teams in company history, Shingo and YAMATO, into challenging them. Shingo and YAMATO were uncertain of their direction going in 2012, until Tominaga inspired them to start -akatsuki-. They wanted to continue to concentrate on Tominaga and Super Shenlong III's growth, but the challenge of the Jimmyz was too tempting. Now they are looking to show that the champions may have bitten off more than they can chew.
6. Open The Triangle Gate Championship - Three-Way Match: Masato Yoshino (WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL) ©, Naruki Doi (WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL) ©, and PAC (WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL) © vs. BxB Hulk (MAD BLANKEY), Cyber Kong (MAD BLANKEY), and "Naoki Tanisaki" (MAD BLANKEY) vs. Don Fujii (Team Veteran Returns), Gamma (Team Veteran Returns), and Masaaki Mochizuki (Team Veteran Returns)
Since becoming Triangle Gate Champions with his brethren Doi and the every improving PAC, Yoshino has made it a point that they would not back down from any challenge and prove themselves to be the best trio in Dragon Gate. Many teams have taken advantage of this proclaimation, resulting in a number of impromptu title matches. Nevertheless, WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL has overcome all obstacles to maintain their hold on the titles. Both MAD BLANKEY and Team Veteran Returns have been trying to most to pull the belts off of them, doing everything they can to earn short after shot. Losing patience, Yoshino agreed to the idea of a three-way match. While this would no doubt increase the chances of them losing the titles, WORLD-1 INTERNATIONAL sees it as another opportunity to show that they are the elite in six-man tag team action.
7. Open The Dream Gate Championship: CIMA (Team Veteran Returns) © vs. Akira Tozawa (MAD BLANKEY)
I've mentioned before the importance of this night for Tozawa, but I'll say it again. It is without question the biggest night of his career and his life. On his birthday, he will be challenging for the top singles title in Dragon Gate. After seven years of struggling, with his future at times in absolute doubt, he is getting a chance to cement his place as one of the top stars of wrestling. All he has to do is beat one of the pillars of the company, CIMA. In his fifteenth year as a professional wrestler, CIMA continues to display himself as one of the aces, always proving that he is an elite wrestler and the heart and soul of the company. Now he's found himself in a position unlike any other. Defending Dream Gate against and challenger who has suffered through so many set-backs before finally reaching this one moment. It's tough to be the spoiler, but he's not ready to give up the belt just yet. So he's going to have to do what he has to in order to maintain his hold on the title.
